CICERO, IL., (July 28, 2000) -- Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti were 12th and 17th respectively in today's two practice sessions at Chicago Motor Speedway. Tracy's quick lap was clocked at 22.947 seconds for an average speed of 161.433 mph around the one-mile oval. Franchitti, meanwhile, turned a lap of 23.080 seconds (160.503 mph).
Kenny Brack had the quickest car of the day, surpassing the track qualifying record by 0.231 seconds. Brack's time was 22.557 seconds (164.224 mph), 0.120 seconds better than Cristiano da Matta with the second best lap. Da Matta made his way around the oval in 22. 677 seconds (163.355 mph), while Helio Castroneves was third with a time of 22.691 seconds (163.254 mph).
Today's afternoon practice session ended a couple of minutes early when Tracy made contact with the inside wall coming out of Turn 4. Tracy lost control of his #26 Team KOOL Green Honda-Reynard because of turbulence when he came up behind a slower car. This year, CART has changed the wing configuration at Chicago Motor Speedway from the low downforce superspeedway package to the high downforce Handford Mark II.
The 24-car field returns to the track for practice tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. with single-car qualifying beginning at 1:30 p.m. Central Time. The 225-lap Target Grand Prix will be broadcast live this Sunday on ABC-TV at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE:
(11th with a lap-time of 22.947 seconds / 161.433 mph)
"The KOOL car is pretty good. We haven't quite reached the speed we had in the open test here a few weeks ago. We're going to try to do a couple of things to the car tonight and we'll see how it goes tomorrow.
"There's no serious damage to the car. I dented the nose, but it's no big deal. Towards the end of the session I was on the throttle, starting a quick lap on a fresh set of tires. I was coming up on a slower car and then I lost control of my car because of the turbulence from the slower car."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE:
(16th with a lap-time of 23.080 seconds / 160.503 mph)
"To be honest we're having a tough time out there. The car isn't right at the moment, so we're searching for solutions. We have been struggling with an imbalance all day. It's tough every weekend. I'm just glad it's not Saturday because we have a bit of work to do still. We tested well here, but the track and weather conditions are different now. Team KOOL Green's engineers and I will find something that works. We usually do."
