TEAM KOOL GREEN WRAPS UP '99 TEST PROGRAM IN CALIFORNIA
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 16, 1999) - Team KOOL Green conducted its final two days of testing for the 1999 season at California Speedway on September 14-15. Dario Franchitti completed nearly 400 miles in two days, and posted a best lap of 232.8 mph on the two mile superspeedway in preparation for the FedEx Championship Series finale there on October 31.
Franchitti, who finished fifth in the season's previous 500 mile race at Michigan Speedway in July, ran 172 miles on Tuesday with a fast lap of 229.5 mph. The following day he ran 222 miles and upped his best speed by more than three mph to 232.8 mph.
"We had a very positive test," said Dario. "The KOOL Honda-Reynard was quick right out of the box. We got up to 226 mph on our very first run and then made some mechanical and aerodynamic changes that enabled us to progressively improve our speed and get up to 229 mph by the end of the day.
"We continued in the same directions on Wednesday and made some very promising gains. We only did one run under 230 mph and did a whole string of laps in the 232 mph range, while the other guys there were running in the 230s. More importantly, our best lap came on tires with 100 miles on them. That says volumes about our Firestone tires but it also gives us confidence that we'll be able to run competitive and consistent speeds in race conditions, not just in qualifying."
Following the test, Team KOOL Green returned to Indianapolis to continue preparations for the upcoming Texaco Grand Prix of Houston on the weekend of September 26, where Franchitti is the defending champion.
