Tracy 18th and Franchitti 22nd In Fontana Qualifying
FONTANA, Calif. - Team KOOL Green drivers Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti struggled for speed in qualifying today and will start 18th and 22nd in Sunday's 500-mile CART season finale at California Speedway.
Tracy's fast lap was 224.952 mph (32.471 seconds), while Franchitti's quick lap was an average of 223.698 mph (32.653 sec) around the 2-mile oval.
Alex Tagliani won his second career pole, with a fast lap of 228.727 mph (228.727 sec) and will line up on the inside of the first row for tomorrow's race. Alongside Tagliani will be Cristiano da Matta, who averaged 228.198 mph (32.009 sec).
Sunday's 250-lap, 500-mile season-ending race begins at 3:30 p.m. EST (12:30 p.m. local time), with live television coverage on ESPN. It will be preceded by a morning warm up from 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. EST.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(3rd with a lap-average speed of 224.952 mph / 32.471 seconds)
"The KOOL car was really loose. We trimmed the car out - took all the downforce out of it. But it must have been too much, because I was having to lift a little in the corners and I couldn't go flat all the way around. Even on the warm up lap, the car was going sideways and I couldn't stay on the throttle. This is a game of taking as much of the downforce out of the car as you can, and I think we went a bit too far. I'm not too concerned about the race. We practiced running in the draft and we're as fast as anyone out there."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(12th with a lap-average speed of 223.698 mph / 32.653 seconds)
"My warm up lap was faster than my qualifying laps. We had to change an engine in the car this morning and it just didn't seem like it was pulling as well this afternoon. After Paul's (Tracy, teammate) run, he said he was a bit too loose so we put some wing back in my KOOL car. But Paul went too far one way and we went too far the other. I'm not too concerned with where we're starting this 500-mile race. I started last (27th) at Michigan this year and nearly won the race (finished second)."
