PAUL TRACY TO START 8TH & DARIO FRANCHITTI 10TH ON THE GRID
CART FedEx Championship Series - FINAL QUALIFYING Round 9 of 20 - MEDIC DRUG CLEVELAND GP
CLEVELAND, Oh., (June 26, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy will line-up from the fourth row, while his teammate Dario Franchitti will start from the fifth row when the green flag falls for the 100-lap Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. ESPN-TV will broadcast the race live.
Rookie Juan Montoya won the pole, going faster than any other driver on the 2.106-mile temporary circuit at Burke Lakefront Airport. Montoya's time was clocked at 56.813 seconds for an average speed of 133.448 mph. He unseated the provisional pole sitter Gil de Ferran, who still managed the second best lap with a time of 57.017 seconds (132.971 mph). Michael Andretti, meanwhile, was third quick in qualifying.
Leading the way for Team KOOL Green, Tracy posted the eighth quickest lap this afternoon with a time of 57.604 seconds (131.682 mph). Franchitti, meanwhile, served an eight-minute penalty today for causing a red flag in yesterday's qualifying. He went off course twice in qualifying today, but still managed the 10th best time with a lap of 57.604 seconds (131.616 mph).
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (2nd with a lap-time of 57.787 / 131.199 mph)
"I didn't have that much trouble with the bumps until this session. We didn' t change anything to the Team KOOL Green car, but somehow we lost our way a little bit. We improved our time from yesterday by a couple of tenths, but it didn't really net us anything. I'm a little disappointed, but we're still starting eighth. We're not that far back for the start. If we make a good start, we'll be right there."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (10th with a lap-time of 58.103 / 130.486 mph)
"It has been a pretty bad weekend so far. We've damaged the car twice. We're in the X-car (spare car) this afternoon and the Team KOOL Green guys did an excellent job to get it ready for me. The car is still not that good over the bumps. We're struggling over the bumps and that contributed to our two offs (off course). I think if we can get the car better over the bumps, then we'll be fine. It's as difficult to pass here as anywhere, but you have the advantage of being able to go three or four cars wide in some turns. Hopefully, we can take advantage of that."
PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship - FINAL QUALIFYING
Team KOOL Green's Jonny Kane went faster in final qualifying, but could not improve his position on the starting grid for tomorrow's 36-lap Indy Lights race. Kane sped around the 2.106-mile circuit at Burke Lakefront Airport in 1:05.956 seconds (114.949 mph) and will start fifth when the green flag falls at 12 noon. Didier Andre won the pole with a lap of 1:05.956 (115.584 mph), while Oriol Servia is on the outside pole with a time of 1:05.648 (115.489 mph). Felipe Giaffone and Derek Higgins will share the second row in front of Kane.
JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20: (5th with a lap-time of 1:05.956 / 114.949 mph)
"We tried a low downforce setup on the Team KOOL Green this morning and it worked quite well. Unfortunately, when we went to it in qualifying we didn't get the same result. I don't really know why, but I know the balance wasn't right with the balance of the car. It's too bad because perhaps we could have gone faster with the high downforce setup. "As for the start of tomorrow's race, it should be interesting. You can't really plan a start because something normally upsets your plan. We'll see what sort of start we get and try to pass a couple of guys. It's a long race though and I think there are enough places to pass."
