Herdez-backed drivers Michel Jourdain Jr. & Memo Gidley took 19 & 17 positions in the first qualifying session for the Honda Indy 300. Gidley suffered an accident towards the end of the session and happily he was uninjured.

Memo Gidley, Car #71 Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing Team: "The free session was kind of fun, I was learning the track and it was wet. For the timed session I was still learning the track. We made a couple of changes and the car was a little bit better, it developed some push, but I think tomorrow we can go faster."

He added: "Regarding the accident it happened in Turn 1, I ran a little in the exit and I spun around. Happily the car had just little damage."

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #19 Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing Team: "During the practice the car was good in the wet. In the qualifying we couldn't set a good time because the traffic and also some push in the car. Later we had problems with the gas pump and we could not improve our performance. For this race I have a new engineer, his name is David Watson. I think it is too early to make some comments about him, but I hope this change will be for good."
