CART Online (February 19, 1998) -- Target/Chip Ganassi Racing drivers Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) and Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) recently completed an extensive road course testing program which took them to the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, Firebird International Raceway and Sebring International Raceway. Vasser, the 1996 PPG Cup champion, spent two days on the road course at Homestead Feb 6-7, immediately following CART Spring Training. He logged more than 330 test miles while the crew concentrated on the setup and handling of the car. Meanwhile, Zanardi, the defending PPG Cup champion, participated in a successful two-day Firestone tire test at Firebird, his first in the team’s new Honda-powered Reynard. Vasser concluded the week-long testing program by spending two days at Sebring before departing for last Friday’s IROC event at Daytona International Speedway. "We’ve had some good tests," said Vasser afterward. "We learned a lot about the new Honda engine and the Firestone tires have been good. "We’re not completely satisfied, but we’re by no means struggling. I’m glad we’re taking the time to focus on road course testing. It will make a difference during the season." "Our basic focus in these early tests is to evaluate the ’98 car’s attitude to the suspension changes which helped the ’97 car," said Tom Anderson, managing director of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing. "These results will be the basis for our next series of tests in Arizona in late February or early March."
