SURFERS PARADISE - Team Rahal's Gigante Champ Car driver Michel Jourdain Jr. took eighth on the provisional grid for Sunday's Lexmark Indy 300 in Surfers Paradise, Australia. Jourdain currently third in the Champ Car World Series championship entered the weekend trailing points leader Paul Tracy by 43 points. Jourdain remains mathematically alive in the championship entering the second round of qualifying on Saturday.

"We weren't where we wanted to be with the Gigante car today. We spent most of the day still working on the balance due to some understeer and traction problems. We made some changes for qualifying and while we improved the understeer we made the traction a little bit worse. We still have some changes we need to make for tomorrow. We really have our work cutout for us because we are still a bit off pace from Bruno."

Jourdain turned his fast lap of 106.536 mph on lap six during his initial qualifying run. Jourdain, like the majority of the Champ Car drivers in qualifying, was unable to go faster on his second set of Bridgestone Potenza tires.

Bruno Junqueira captured the provisional pole position and guaranteed himself a front row starting spot for Sunday's race. Team Rahal has never won the race in Surfers Paradise finishing second three times. The best start for a Team Rahal driver on the 2.8 mile course was second for Bryan Herta in 1999.

Sunday's Lexmark Indy 300 will be seen live on SPEED in the United States beginning at 12:30 AM Sunday morning. Lexmark Indy 300 Surfers Paradise Provisional Qualifying Friday, October 24, 2003
