Philippe Prepared for Points Battle with Paul Tracy
Points Battle: Philippe's break-out season has featured many milestones, but his biggest accomplishment will be a top-five finish in the series championship. Philippe has enjoyed a tight points battle with veteran and former Champion Paul Tracy the last several races. Philippe has held fourth position in the championship, through a string of top-five finishes. Unfortunately, his fortunes changed last month at Road America. Philippe looked set for another personal best, a second-place finish when he lost a rear tire after the final pit stop. He had to settle for 14th as a result and he lost two points to Paul Tracy who took over the fourth place standings in the series championship. The battle continues "Down Under."
CTE HVM Success: The Surfers Paradise circuit has brought plenty of pleasant memories to the HVM team, including their first Champ Car victory in 2002 and a podium in 2004, both with former HVM driver Mario Dominguez.
2006 vs. 2005 Philippe's star began to shine last year when he earned four top-ten starts, four top ten finishes and was voted the most improved driver by his peers. This year, he has out-performed many of those peers and shattered all of his personal records. He has earned eight top-ten starts and seven top-ten finishes, five of which are top-five finishes. As Philippe fights for fourth in the 2006 championship, his star is shining bright.
Nelson Philippe: "I've been in Australia for a week already exploring the Bush and the Great Barrier Reef with my family. What an incredible country, it's been great to unwind, the people of Australia are incredibly friendly and I am so thankful I had the opportunity to do this. I am ready for a great race result. The track in Surfers Paradise is absolutely my favorite street circuit. It has all of the elements that make for an exciting race for the fans and a very exciting yet challenging race for the drivers. My goal is to finish the last two races in the top-five, it is very important for me to get back to fourth position in the championship, I am sure PT and I will have a good battle for that. I was ahead by two going into the last race but unfortunately, luck was not on our side in that final pitstop. Right now I am two points behind PT for fourth, so leaving Australia ahead of him in the championship is certainly my goal this weekend."
