Justin out of Surfers Paradise event with broken wrist
Justin injured his wrist during Friday's pre-qualifying warm-up and has been forced to pull out of the Lexmark Indy 300 event in Surfers Paradise, Australia. He was third fastest in Friday morning's practice session and was hopeful of a strong provisional qualifying result for the CDW-RuSPORT team. However, he nicked an apex tire during the pre-qualifying warm-up and, though there was no damage to the car at all, the contact violently jerked the steering wheel out of his hands, hurting his right wrist.
Under the supervision of Champ Car's medical team Justin was taken to hospital for X-rays which revealed that he had broken the scaphoid bone in his wrist. The injury is too severe for him to continue driving and he has had to withdraw from the event. Justin will return home over the weekend to Denver for further medical treatment.
"I'm very disappointed not to be able to race this weekend", lamented Justin. "It is a track and a race that I enjoy a lot and was looking forward to. I thought we had a very good chance of finishing on the podium for CDW." He added, "It seems hard to believe that such a small incident can put me out for the weekend. What makes this more difficult is that, from a racetrack configuration standpoint, this was totally avoidable."
"Needless to say it is very disappointing to have to withdraw the #9 CDW car for the remainder of the weekend here at Surfer's Paradise," said RuSPORT President Jeremy Dale. "Justin's incident was a very minor one and in fact he drove the car back to the pit without any problems, but there is just no possible way for him to drive a Champ Car this weekend. Our main focus with Justin now is to get him back to the US and get him 100% healthy as quickly as we can."
