Bridgestone Pole Qualifying Round 1
Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "It feels great obviously. Yeah, we went out on the black tires and had a reasonable lap. Then we sat and waited, put the red tires on, found a lot more grip with that. I was pushing really hard, although the car still wasn't ideal. Yeah, we arrived on pole position. I was surprised, 31.4. The next lap I was on before the red flag I was actually up again. There's more time in it. Obviously the track will run all weekend and tomorrow will be quicker so we'll have a shot at the real pole position. I'm looking forward to it."
Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "We took off, at the beginning with a pretty good lap. I escaped a very scary moment in the first chicane and thought I was going to crash it but made it. But that was actually my quickest lap. So when I went back out after we decided with Craig to switch to the alternate tires, it was looking good. We ran a good first lap. I made a small adjustment in the car and went into turn one and that was that. After that incident I actually had quite a few qualifying not to get in the way, and when I went back up for it, I was in the fast lap, like two and three tenths, and when I arrived in the fast chicane, A.J. was in the tires. A little bit of a shame for my McDonald's Team. My car is right there this weekend, and great job to Team Australia and to Will, and hopefully we'll have another shot at it tomorrow if it's dry."
Bruno Junqueira #2 Hole in the Wall Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone/Lola/Bridgestone -- "It was a good session. The track was very fast today, kind of shiny. I enjoyed it a lot. I'm really happy to be back here at Surfers Paradise. This track is very nice. The first test I had a good lap and was a little behind Sebastien, about three poles, and decided to put the red tires to the second round. First couple of laps I was in traffic, I had a little mistakes. It was a really good first lap, like half a second faster, and I went through really, really fast and I rushed the inside tire on the left - on the right - on the left center. I came out there and said they're going to have to stick because I have to make the last three corners because this lap is good. Then they called the red. I don't know, I was maybe relieved that I had to do those corners. Unfortunately because of that I didn't improve my lap time on the red tires. Will Power, well done. He got the pole, and we'll see what happens tomorrow.
Oriol Servia #6 Gulfstream Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "I am happy with the performance of the Gulfstream -- PKV Racing team today. The team did a good job...we are fourth...we are competitive...we are contenders. It is just you want to be in the pole position. I am happy with how we have been working the last five, six races, but everyone else is working too, so nothing is free out there. We just need to keep pushing. We still have some room for improvement, so hopefully tomorrow the Gulfstream -- PKV Racing team can be a little better."
Alex Tagliani #15 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "We have a good car, but unfortunately in qualifying the car was not as good as this morning. We made some changes and they didn't work as good as we wanted, which put us behind some of the guys that improved. Will made some changes that worked and that helped put him up front. I'm really happy for him and Team Australia. Hopefully we are both up the front tomorrow."
Mario Dominguez #8 Pemex/GICSA/Del Valle Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "We had a big mechanical issue that really became a problem during my first stint in provisional qualifying this afternoon; therefore I could not go back out for another run. However, we have been making positive improvements every time I go out on track, so things are looking good. Despite our problems, we were still able to finish ninth, which is not a bad result for the first day here in Australia. I was hoping for a better result, and I feel we could have done it, but that gives us hope for tomorrow during the final round of qualifying. I look forward to getting back out there to hopefully get a good position on the grid for myself, the team, our sponsors Pemex, GICSA, Del Valle, and my personal sponsors Telmex and Bridgestone for the race on Sunday."
Antonio Pizzonia #18 Lexington Energy Services Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "Well it is another new track for me, so I did a lot of learning today. I feel that there is definitely more to come from me and the #18 Lexington Energy Services car, but overall I am happy with our accomplishment today. We are definitely moving in the right direction, we keep improving the car each time that I go out. If we keep improving we should have a good starting spot on the grid for Sunday's event, which will be good for the team and our new sponsor Lexington Energy Services. I am really having a good time, this is a great track and I can't wait to get back out there tomorrow to continue learning and find ways to run even faster times."
Katherine Legge #20 Bell Micro Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Obviously I am disappointed because I lost a lot of track time due to a problem with the engine. It is really not that big a deal as far as qualifying because the times should be quicker tomorrow, so the Bell Micro -- PKV Racing team will have an opportunity to move up the grid. It's just that this is my first time at Surfers and this is a very tricky and challenging circuit, so the more track time I get the better off I am going to be in final qualifying and the race."
