CHAMPCAR/CART: Surfers Paradise: ASTJ/Vasser preview

Jimmy Vasser, #12 American Spirit/Ford-Cosworth/Reynard

2002 at Surfers Paradise: Vasser started the 2002 Australian Indy in 10th position and finished 12th despite an early race accident.

Consecutive Starts: Vasser is second only to Al Unser Jr. in the most consecutive starts overall. Since Laguna Seca in 1993, Vasser has made 182 consecutive race starts; just nine race starts shy of Unser's record.

On the Road: Australia will be the fourth country Vasser has visited in the past week. Upon his departure form Mexico City he returned to the USA for just a day before his trip to Monza, Italy. He went to Italy to see his good friend Alex Zanardi race on Thursday and on Tuesday he arrived in Surfers Paradise, Australia.

Vasser on Surfers Paradise: "Without a doubt the Australian race is the event I look forward to more than probably any other all year. The weather is almost always excellent with the exception of the unfortunate downpour last year and the fans are incredible. I won this race in 1996 and there has never been a repeat winner, so of course I would like to be the guy to break the curse! The course is exceptional; it is most certainly one of the best street circuits in the world. Our progress has been positive; we have learned a few things as a group that should help us Surfers Paradise. It is not the type of track that should be good for the Reynard, but I think we might have figured a few things out that should help us. I am looking forward to a little fun in the sun and a fast car on the track."
