Vasser fifth quick, Hunter-Reay plagued with mechanical gremlins.
Jimmy Vasser had a busy day today, not only did he set the fifth fastest qualifying lap of the day, nearly a second faster than the rest of the Reynard's; he gave a V8 Super Car a try. Vasser drove the #41 Stone Brothers Racing V8 Super Car today at Surfers Paradise. He drove only three laps, but impressed the Stone Brothers crew. Australian Marc Winterbottom recently won the 2003 Konica Series Championship in this car. Ryan Hunter-Reay has had better days in his rookie campaign. He suffered from mechanical issues in every session, leaving him stranded either on the track or in the pitlane.
JIMMY VASSER, #12 American Spirit/Ford-Reynard/Cosworth
Jimmy Vasser on the qualifying:
"I am reasonably pleased with our results today. We made some positive changes from this mornings practice. I flat-spotted the left front in my second run so I didn't improve my time there, I think I could have, but didn't. We were almost a second faster than the other Reynard's so that is a positive."
Vasser on the V8 Super Car:
"What a great experience, this is something I have always wanted to do. The car is fantastic and great fun to drive, I am really impressed. It is fairly similar to a Champ Car in some ways, much better than a Busch car. I have to say though, I feel bad because I think I was tough on the gearbox. That H-pattern with my left had would definitely take some getting used to. Thanks to everyone at Stone Brothers Racing for this opportunity, it was a blast."
RYAN HUNTER-REAY, #31 Gonher de Mexico/Ford-Reynard/Cosworth
Hunter-Reay on qualifying:
"Today was just one of those days where nothing really went right for us. Each time we went on track we had something break. We are going to take the information from the 12 car tonight to apply for tomorrow. The positive is that I did get some limited track time and that we still have another practice and qualifying session tomorrow."
Graham Taylor, Team Manager:
"I am pleased with Jimmy's run today. His time came from his first run. Some circumstances prevented him from bettering it on his second run, traffic mostly. Ryan has failed to get into a rhythm on this circuit, mainly because of mechanical issues on his car."
