FedEx CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES STAR FRANCHITTI INJURED DURING SPRING TRAINING INCIDENT AT HOMESTEAD

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2000) - FedEx Championship Series star Dario Franchitti was hospitalized Wednesday for injuries sustained as a result of a single-car accident during the opening day of CART Spring Training at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

According to Dr. Steve Olvey, CART Director of Medical Affairs, Franchitti was awake and alert at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami after sustaining non-displaced fractures of the left hip and pelvis, and multiple small contusions of the brain. Olvey said that no surgery will be required for any of the injuries, but Franchitti is scheduled to remain hospitalized for a few days.

Franchitti, runner-up for the series championship last season for Team KOOL Green, was injured after his KOOL Honda Reynard made contact with the wall in Turn 3, made an 180-degree turn and came to rest in Turn 4 with approximately 10 minutes remaining in the final session of the afternoon. Franchitti, according to Olvey, was awake and alert when the CART Safety Team removed him from the car.

Franchitti was airlifted to Jackson Memorial for x-rays, which determined the extent of the current injuries. Olvey said that it would be a week-to-week determination on whether Franchitti will be able to compete March 26 in the season-opening Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami Presented by Toyota at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
