INDIANAPOLIS (July 29, 1999) -Team KOOL Green battled Mother Nature and an assortment of gremlins during a two-day test at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on July 28-29. Paul Tracy completed a little more than 100 miles in the # 26 KOOL Honda-Reynard during the course of the two days, turning a best lap time of 1:06.63s.
After experiencing gear selection problems early on Wednesday morning, Tracy and the other drivers participating in the test were sidelined by torrential rain storms. In the afternoon Tracy and the Team KOOL Green crew experimented with different mechanical and front-end aerodynamic set-ups. Owing to the heavy rains, track conditions were less than ideal, contributing to several off-course excusions by other drivers. Tracy completed 88 miles of running and regularly lapped in the 66s range.
Thursday morning the team focused on the KOOL Honda-Reynard's braking system, but the test was halted when Tracy experienced engine problems.
"We didn't do a whole lot of miles," said Tracy, "but we did learn some things about the aerodynamic and mechanical grip at the front of the car, which is crucial at a track like Mid-Ohio with all the elevation changes and changes in direction.
"We were all set to go on Thursday with a fresh engine and new tires. The car felt pretty good and we were just getting ready to make some more changes to the set-up when we had to stop. That was disappointing. But we came away from the test with a well-balanced car and I'm optimistic about our performance at the Mid-Ohio race."
Following the test Team KOOL Green returned to Indianapolis to begin final preparations for the upcoming Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit on the weekend of August 8.
