First qualifying for the San Jose Grand Prix was a close, but messy affair that was interrupted twice by red flags. The upshot was that all of the cars were out on track in the last few minutes, jostling for clear air and good lap times. Justin ended up 8th fastest (50.504s, 102.835 mph), while his team-mate Cristiano da Matta was 10th fastest (50.734s). Paul Tracy took provisional pole with a lap of 50.156s, while Sebastien Bourdais and A.J. Allmendinger were 2nd and 3rd fastest in the session.

After his first stint Justin had hustled his #9 CDW machine to 3rd spot, less than three tenths of a second off the pace at that point. In the busy final laps a number of other drivers switched to the faster red Bridgestones, whereas Justin stayed on blacks and has two fresh sets of reds available for final qualifying.

"I'm a little bit disappointed with today", said Justin. "The car didn't feel too bad, but we've got a little bit of work to do to give ourselves an opportunity on Sunday. All of the corners are very similar, so if you fix the problem in one corner, you'll fix it in all of them and pick up quite a bit of time. Hopefully, it's just a couple of clicks away and we'll be there."
