RuSPORT Completes First Test with New Panoz DP01
For RuSPORT Sebring, Florida was an opportunity to learn about the new cars
Loveland, CO, January 25, 2007 - The RuSPORT team finished their first testing session at Sebring International Raceaway this afternoon with strong lap times recorded by both Justin Wilson and Mario Dominguez and a higher level of comfort with the new Panoz DP01. Wilson, #9 CDW / RuSPORT was able to get a feel for how this new ride will handle in the upcoming chase for the 2007 Vanderbilt Cup. His fastest lap time came on Wednesday which was a 51.273. Dominguez was in the #10 RuSPORT finishing the testing sessions with a top lap time of 51.166 which he ran on Wednesday as well. For both the RuSPORT team and the drivers, this testing down in Sebring was an opportunity to become more familiar with the Panoz DP01 and the 2007 Champ Car World Series rule changes.
"It is good to finally get into the new car and get a real feel for the Panoz DP01." stated Wilson. "We had problems today with the gearbox and shifter system which was a bit frustrating, but I'm confident that the team can sort out the problem. The entire team has been working very hard to get us to this point. It's reassuring to me to see the passion that everyone has to get these cars on track, because the more track time we have, the better understanding we'll have of the DP01. We came away from this test with a lot of positives but also some work to do."
Wilson continued, "The new Panoz is a very quick car that is nice to drive. It feels a little more like a Formula 1 car with its high nose and paddle shift. Definitely a more modern car than what we had."
"I want to start by thanking the entire RuSPORT team for their commitment, hard work and dedication to getting both cars on track this week," began Jeremy Dale, RuSPORT president. "It was an enormous amount of work and everyone pulled together to get it done. We also want to compliment Champ Car and Panoz on such a great car. They deserve a lot of credit, the drivers enjoy the car and it will be a big part of moving the series forward."
"For us this was a good test, though not without some traditional new car gremlins," continued Dale. "We all had small issues that we encountered along the way and have a few problems to work through. We learned a fair amount about the car over the past three days and can now go back to the race shop and work through it. Both drivers did a very good job this week. As usual, we were very impressed with Justin who had an excellent performance. This was our first exposure to Mario's driving and he did a great job as well. We want to thank him for his hard work and professionalism in the testing and development aspects. He really is an excellent driver and we hope to work with him in the future."
"I am grateful to RuSPORT for the opportunity to test this week," said Dominguez. "The team was very welcoming and helpful while learning the details of this new car. We were able to try things with the new car and test details that will help the team for the rest of the year. The technology of this new car is very good. I was impressed with the performance of the Panoz that on only the second day of testing it was doing comparable times to the Lola. I'm confident that with more testing, we will ultimately be setting faster lap times than in the past."
RuSPORT now looks forward to the next open test session which will be held on February 12th and 13th at MSR in Houston, Texas. The first race of the Champ Car World Series 2007 season will be held on the Streets of Las Vegas, Sunday, April 8th, 2007. Las Vegas kicks off an exciting 17 race season of the Champ Car World Series.
