Rockingham 500 Will Be Britain's Fastest Ever Race
The Rockingham 500, Britain's round of the FedEx CART Championship, will be the fastest motor race ever to take place in Great Britain, predicted top CART driver Christian Fittipaldi after visiting today, the 1.5 mile banked oval track near Corby in Northamptonshire, which will host the event on September 14th.
The fastest laps at close to 220mph may not be repeated in 2003, said Fittipaldi, who predicted that the speeds for next year's race would be reduced by technical changes to the cars.
"Last year, we raced here with almost no testing and the fastest lap in practice was 24.7 seconds, 215mph" said Team Newman-Haas driver Fittipaldi. "We've got better wing set-ups and aerodynamics this year so we'll be way quicker than that, maybe 218, even 220mph."
"During Friday qualifying, with a perfect set-up, we may be able to do the whole lap wide-open, on full throttle" said the 31 year-old Brazilian. "That would be awesome".
Fittipaldi also reckoned that the sheer speed may be a once in a lifetime experience for British race fans. "For 2003 we'll have lower turbo boost and maybe changes to the wings, so whoever sets a track record this year, may have the record for all time. Even then we'd still be looking at racing at over 200mph."
Tickets are still available for the 2002 Rockingham 500 on September 14th. Prices start at £40 for adults with a reserved grandstand seat and an uninterupted view of the entire circuit. Ticket and Information Hotline - 08700 134 044
