CHAMPCAR/CART: Road America: Walker Racing race report

Rodolfo Lavin (R), ...

Rodolfo Lavin (R), #5 Corona Competition Team Ford-Cosworth XFE-Reynard-Bridgestone

Lavin made contact in Turn 5 on the initial lap of the race damaging the rear suspension and wing. During the two red flag conditions that followed shortly thereafter, the #5 Corona Walker Racing crew was allowed to make the necessary repairs to the car.

"I lost the rear exiting Turn 5 and just touched the wall breaking the rear suspension. It's really a shame for Corona and the Walker Racing crew because I think we could have had a good race. We were 12th overall in the combined practice report, so we had a good car. Qualifying didn't go well, but we were back up into 12th place during the warm-up and it wasn't looking bad for the race. We make little gains all the time and going back to Mid-Ohio where we had a good test in July will hopefully be good for us."

Darren Manning, (R), #15 RAC Walker Racing Ford-Cosworth XFE-Reynard-Bridgestone

The Englishman finally got the wet Champ Car race that he's been angling for all season. Manning just got tangled up in the restart incident on Lap 8 involving Michael Jourdain and Tiago Monteiro. The Simple Green Safety Team was able to push-start the #15 RAC Walker Racing Champ Car putting Manning at the back of the pack in 14th place. On Lap 13, he stopped for his first mandatory pit stop and the Walker Racing crew quickly changed his damaged front wing in addition to his regular stop for fuel and tires. Manning returned to the track in 13th place on Lap 13 and began his steady run to the front under the wet conditions advancing to seventh by Lap 18. Manning pitted under yellow on Lap 21 and the RAC Walker Racing pit crew gave the rookie another stellar pit stop putting him out in fourth place. Manning held his own in fourth until losing third gear with just two laps to go. Max Papis and Patrick Carpentier were able to pass him on Laps 33 and 34, respectively. Manning finished sixth, his fifth consecutive top-ten finish.

"What a great race! I've been itching to have a wet race because I knew we could have a strong finish and we nearly matched our best effort of the year (fourth). The RAC Walker Racing crew gave me two fantastic stops replacing the front wing on the first stop and then gaining me three positions in the pits on the second stop. I went from seventh to fourth. I was holding my own then until I lost third gear, so Papis and Carpentier were able to get me at the end there. It's a great finish for the team though - our fifth consecutive top-ten finish and I think we'll gain a position in the points standings."

Fast Facts:

Marked his 13th Champ Car start, Has collected five consecutive top-ten finishes, Has eleven top-ten finishes total, Collected eight championship points for the sixth place finish for a season total of 68, Manning gained one position in the championship fight this weekend, Currently ranked eighth overall in the championship and second in the Rookie of the Year standings
