ELKHART LAKE, WI . . . Michel Jourdain Jr., Team Rahal's Gigante Champ Car driver, will start tenth for the Mario Andretti Grand Prix of Road America on Sunday. Despite bettering his fast lap from Friday qualifying, Jourdain's fast lap of 139117 mph actually dropped him on the starting grid. The field is tightly bunched with positions two through eleven being separated by a half-second. For Jourdain it marks just the third time this season he has failed to start in the first three rows. The starting position is the best of Jourdain's career at Road America eclipsing the 16th he started last season when he finished ninth.

"It is very disappointing for the Gigante team to be tenth," said Jourdain. "Especially when we are trying to close ground on Paul [Tracy] and Bruno {Junqueira] in the championship. Yesterday when we were ninth in qualifying it was because of an accident and we still had the second fastest time. Today we just didn't get the job done. It was a lot of little things that added up that hurt us. I was able to get several clear laps, but I had a little brake problem and as a result I flat spotted a set of tires. That didn't help our cause. All I can say is I know we will be better tomorrow for the race."

Jourdain is currently third in the Champ Car World Series championship and his fellow title contenders didn't all succeed. Bruno Junqueira, second in the points, claimed the pole position and for the second straight day earned a championship point. Points leader Paul Tracy qualified sixth.

The Mario Andretti Grand Prix at Road America is being broadcast in the United States on HDNet, the premium high definition broadcast channel.
