TEAM KOOL GREEN'S FRANCHITTI SECOND IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING AT ROAD AMERICA

ELKHART LAKE, Wisc., (Aug. 14, 1998) - Dario Franchitti was second in provisional qualifying today, powering his KOOL-Reynard Honda around the 14-turn, 4.048-mile permanent road course in 1:40.640 seconds at 144.801 mph.

Franchitti's fast time was only 0.186 seconds off the quickest lap of the day by Gil de Ferran, who claimed the provisional pole with a new track record of 1:40.464 seconds at 145.056 mph. Michael Andretti was third quickest in the session with a lap of 1:40.767 seconds at 144.619 mph.

Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy was 13th today and will look to improve in tomorrow's final qualifying. Tracy completed the circuit in 1:41.877 seconds at 143.043 mph. He will join Franchitti in the faster group of cars for qualifying tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET. The slower group of cars will begin qualifying at 12:45 p.m.

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (2nd with a lap-time of 1:40.464 seconds at 145.056 mph)

"Somebody put a lot of stuff on the track in the carousel. That's a very long corner and I got a little bit sideways in it and lost some time. I'm happy with where we are in qualifying today, but I know we'll need to go faster tomorrow. I've got a litt le bit of understeer, but generally I'm very happy with the car. It's difficult to drive here because you have to run with very little downforce and you have to setup for the fast and slow corners."

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (13th with a lap-time of 1:41.877 seconds at 143.043 mph)

"In qualifying we set some good times on the first set of tires. I came in and made some more changes to the car and went back out. I got through the first couple of corners really well - faster than I've ever gone here. I just tried to go for more and locked up the brakes, squared the tires off and that was the end of the lap. I'm just frustrated with myself because the car was good."
