(August 12, 1998) -- Defending Texaco/Havoline 200 champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) has roots in European road racing, which may account for his staggering success in FedEx Championship Series events contested on permanent road courses. Zanardi, the current PPG Cup points leader and defending series champion, has made 10 career starts on permanent road courses and his resume includes six victories, four pole positions and eight podium finishes. He swept all four permanent road-course poles in his rookie season of 1996, and followed with victories at Portland, Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca, and a third-place finish at Road America.

Zanardi followed with back-to-back victories from the outside pole at Mid-Ohio and Road America during last year's drive to the FedEx Championship Series championship, and added a third place at Laguna Seca, also from the outside pole. Zanardi's sixth permanent road course victory came at Portland this season. Finishes of 11th at Portland last year and 12th at Mid-Ohio last week are his only results outside the top three in 10 starts on permanent road courses.
