CHAMPCAR/CART: Road America: RuSPORT Friday report

A.J. Allmendinger, ...

A.J. Allmendinger, #10
Qualified 6th 1:44.972 / 138.825-mph

Despite having not participated in the Road America Champ Car open test earlier in the season, A.J. Allmendinger qualified a respectable 6th in today's provisional qualifying. Allmendinger's session was predominantly clean aside from a slight off-track excursion on his final flyer into Turn 14.

A.J. Allmendinger

"I'm pleased with today without a doubt. Every lap we progressed and if I hadn't thrown it off on my last lap on the last turn, we probably could've been third or fourth. I've got a good car as far as handling, so if we can tweak it a little more, you can gain a lot of time on a track like this. But I'm happy with sixth, especially since this is my first time at Road America in a Champ Car."

Jeremy Dale, Team President

"RuSPORT elected not to test here earlier during the Champ Car open test, and for us, that was still the right decision at that time. We knew we'd pay a penalty for that when we came here for the race weekend, so qualifying 6th and 10th is pretty good from that perspective. Granted (Sebastien) Bourdais and Paul Tracy didn't get in a clean lap, but we're still pretty happy to start from there to improve for tomorrow."

Michel Jourdain Jr., #9
Qualified 10th 1:45.377 / 138.292-mph

Although Michel Jourdain Jr. and the #9 Gigante car missed the Champ Car open test earlier in the year, Jourdain again qualified in the top ten. The RuSPORT crew feel confident in the data gathered today and will now get to work to implement the changes that will hopefully result in an improvement for Saturday's final qualifying.

Michel Jourdain Jr.

"From this morning's session until now, we've improved the problem we were having with the brakes, but still we've got a few problems with the front of the car causing some oversteer. We still have time though before tomorrow's qualifying to fix those problems and hopefully move up the grid. Considering the improvement we've had so far this season from our first qualifying to Saturday qualifying, I'm sure tomorrow will be much better for us."

Jeremy Dale, Team President

"Michel in tenth place is just a few tenths of a second behind A.J. Considering that we didn't test here, qualifying in sixth and tenth on Friday is a pretty reasonable expectation. We have a good place to start to work to move up the grid for tomorrow."

UPDATE:

RuSPORT drivers A.J. Allmendinger each gained a position in Friday's Provisional Qualifying for the Grand Prix of Road America after the disqualification of the #12 car of PKV Racing's Jimmy Vasser. This moves Allmendinger into 5th and Jourdain into 9th.
