RSPORTS DUO ROUND OUT THE TOP TEN DURING PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING AT ROAD AMERICA
ELKHART LAKE, WI (August 10, 2007) - The RSPORTS team was quick right out of the box at Road America today, but the afternoon session did not see them improve vastly as the duo of Justin Wilson and Alex Tagliani managed to round out the top ten in provisional qualifying for Sunday's Champ Car Generac Grand Prix at Road America.
This morning the RSPORTS cars were taking flight through the rolling hills of the 4.048-mile permanent road course known as Road America. This track is a true racing experience, one that will see some of the best road racer dominate. Having two experienced Champ Car veterans, RSPORTS demonstrated they have what it takes to be competitive on this track with drivers Tagliani and Wilson. Tagliani recorded a time of 1:44.506 (139.445 mph) during an 11 lap run. Teammate Wilson was right behind him, posting a time of 1:44.804 (139.048 mph) and completed 10 laps. The two sat third and fourth, respectively.
Feeling confident in their cars after a good morning run, the stablemates headed out for the first round of qualifying this afternoon. During the 15-minute warm-up segment of qualifying, Wilson made his way to the top of the charts recording a time of 104.244 after five laps. He would round out the top two when the checkered flag dropped, after Sebastien Bourdais, eventual pole winner this afternoon, topped the charts.
After the ten minute break, it was go time as the green flag dropped signifying the start to the 35-minute allotment time of provisional qualifying. It was crunch time, and despite a good morning run, both RSPORTS drivers struggled this afternoon. Wilson began to experience understeer on his #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone early on, and it did not go away for him. Running both stints on the Bridgestone Black Potenza tires, Wilson was able to save two sets of the faster, softer Bridgestone Red Potenza tires for tomorrow, the final round of qualifying for Round 10 of the 2007 Champ Car World Series. After completing nine laps, he posted a time of 1:43.525 (140.766 mph) which has him sitting fifth on the provisional pole in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
Tagliani just did not have the car this afternoon to get the results he wanted during the qualifying time period. He recorded a time of 1:43.689 (140.543 mph) after completing eight laps to salvage a ninth spot overall. Tagliani also saved his Bridgestone Red Potenza tires so that he has two sets to run on tomorrow during the final round of qualifying.
There will be another practice session tomorrow morning before the final round of qualifying for Sunday's Champ Car Generac Grand Prix at Road America gets underway at 2:10 p.m. CT. Fans can follow the RSPORTS team on the internet by logging onto www.champcar.ws and signing up for Race Director.
Alex Tagliani #8 RSPORTS Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone
"Obviously our results today are not what we wanted. We are a little bit disappointed because this morning the #8 RSPORTS car was doing very well, but we barely improved our time this afternoon because we lost some grip. Our car is definitely a couple of tenths quicker, probably in the top three without that issue. I think that we need to get it done tomorrow and that we have the car capable of doing it."
Justin Wilson #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone
"I am a little disappointed with our result this afternoon. I was experiencing some understeer on the #9 CDW car, which got worse as the session went on. I was fairly pleased with the car until I saw the times. So, I am not exactly sure what is going on, but I do know that we need to find some more speed. We just need to work a little harder tonight to hopefully improve our position on the grid during tomorrow's final qualifying session."
