DESPITE ROCKY START CASTRONEVES FINISHES IN THE POINTS AT ELKHART LAKE
Sunday's Motorola 220 proved to be a grueling 55-lap race, with only ten drivers finishing the event. While the majority of drivers were unable to complete the race, those who were able to finish still encountered their fair share of problems. Helio Castroneves had trouble early when he made contact with Michael Andretti going into turn two on the first lap. Castroneves went off the course, but was able to regain control of his 2000 Marlboro Honda Reynard and re-enter the race in last place. He moved up to 11th by the time he made his final pit stop and was able to move up three positions to finish ninth. He earned four points and remains in eighth place in the FedEx Championship Series point standings.
DE FERRAN HAS DISAPPOINTING WEEKEND IN ELKHART LAKE
Despite the fact that Gil de Ferran was among the fastest all weekend, he failed to finish Sunday's Motorola 220. With his qualifying position of second on Saturday, de Ferran has now qualified in the top-five in eleven of the thirteen races run this season and has been on the front row six times.
On Sunday, however, de Ferran experienced gear box problems coming out of turn two on the first lap. He came into the pits where it was determined that the gearbox was irreparable and his day was over. De Ferran dropped one place in the point standings and is currently third, just 19 points out of first place.
CASTRONEVES ON ELKHART LAKE
"On the first lap, Michael (Andretti) braked in front of me going into turn two and I tried to avoid hitting him but I had too much momentum and we made contact. I went off the course through the gravel, tried to keep the engine going and get onto the grass so I could get back on the track without hitting anything else. I damaged the front wing in the initial contact so I pitted (lap nine) and the Team did a great job replacing the nose of the car and getting me back out. From there I followed Tim's (Cindric) calls and we were able to make it to the end on three stops and earn points. It's a shame we had a rough start because the Marlboro car was good today and I was able to run with the leaders. We'll get back at it and see what happens in Vancouver in a couple of weeks."
DE FERRAN ON ELKHART LAKE
"It's a huge disappointment for the entire Marlboro Team Penske Team to leave the race without any points. I don't know what happened. I was just exiting turn two and I went to upshift and all of a sudden I got a box full of neutrals and I knew something was wrong. It's really too bad that this had to happen at this time in the Championship battle because we usually don't have these kinds of problems. But there is nothing we can do about it now and we just have to turn the page and move on."
CINDRIC ON ELKHART LAKE
"This weekend demonstrated how quickly the tide can turn in this series -- you don't win championships without executing every weekend. Elkhart's results were well below everyone at Marlboro Team Penske's expectations and we intend to rebound at Vancouver."
