1999 Christian Fittipaldi of Newman/Haas Racing ended the search for his elusive first FedEx Championship Series victory before 75,000 at the 1999 Texaco/Havoline 200. Fittipaldi (Big Kmart Ford Swift), making the 71st start of his five-year FedEx Championship Series career, took the lead when Juan Montoya. Fittipaldi held off Newman/Haas Racing teammate Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford Lola) over the remainder of the 55-lap event, finishing 1.060 seconds ahead of Andretti, who improved from fourth to second in the championship with his runner-up effort. Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Patrick Racing Ford Reynard) finished third for his sixth top-five result of the season. Despite his misfortune, Montoya departed Road America with 113 points and the championship lead, followed by Andretti with 95 and Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/ Cummins Special Honda Reynard) with 87.
