LAST YEARS RACE
Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) earned his third consecutive victory and his fourth in the previous five FedEx Championship Series events when he drove to victory in the 1997 Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America. Zanardi took the lead from Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) on the 36th of 50 laps and finished 6.148 seconds ahead of polesitter Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest Mercedes), Blundell's PacWest Racing Group teammate.
Zanardi averaged 102.995 miles per hour en route to victory in the event, the start of which was delayed more than two hours by rain. Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) finished third, 10.748 seconds behind Zanardi, whose three consecutive victories marked the ninth time in CART history that a driver had accomplished that feat. Zanardi's victory added to his PPG Cup points lead, which stood at 168-130 over de Ferran exiting the event. Paul Tracy (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) was third with 121 points.
