CHAMPCAR/CART: Rio Tasman Qualifying

Team Tasman Qualifyin notes Tony Kanaan, #21 LCI Reynard-Honda: "For sure, this is a big result for me -- starting third in my home country. I am very happy but this is just the start. We still have a lot to do. Qualifying in Champ Cars really doesn't matter. It is just so competitive. We need to try to keep calm and finish the race. We have a good car and the entire Tasman team did a perfect job. "I did only about 60 laps total over the two days because we had gearbox problems, and the car was good from the beginning. I would really like to say thanks to my engineers, Steve (Horne) and my mechanics because without them I couldn't have done it. They worked so hard. This is kind of a respect that I can give to them after a tough two days. "I remember Steve (Horne) coming up to me after we finished ninth in Nazareth. He said 'Okay Tony, from now on we can push a little bit harder and I am not going to hold you back as much. Let's say your target for qualifying in Rio will be top six'. We came here with that goal and I did three positions better than he asked me. I wish for the next race that he would say top three and I can do first for him." Steve Horne, Team Owner: "It was a good qualifying effort obviously. We had a little problem this morning which limited his laps. I think Tony did an excellent job, and the engineers did an excellent job with the setup. It's a good starting position but we just have to continue to stick to our strategy of finishing races so we can learn more."
