The governor of Rio de Janeiro State, Anthony Garotinho, confirmed yesterday that the State Governmente will sponsor the CART FedEx Rio 200 Race with R$4 million (reais).

The deal was made after Garotinho and Emerson Fittipaldi, promoter of the race, met over breakfast yesterday and announced late yesterda Brazilian time.

"This race is very important for the image of our state and we will not let this race be cancelled. It is our duty to make this race happen" said Garotinho.

Fittipaldi said that this race projects a very positive image of the city of Rio to other countries. "I want to say again that the deal is between CART and the local government, but they did not agree with the higher (sanctioning) fee this year. On February 16th the Rio government should have paid US$ 2,7 million to CART, but they did not want to pay. This would be very bad for our image if they would not pay the fee."
