Michael Andretti was fastest on the first day of the RIO 400.

The day started with a blue sky, and everyone was looking forward to a great fight on the track. Some minutes after the start of the first practice session, it started to rain heavily at the Emerson Fittipaldi circuit in Rio de Janeiro.

During the afternoon session all the cars went on track went and the racing really began.

"The track is very dirty, and has no grip" said De Ferran, second on the grid with a time of 39.711 secs and an average of 168.981 mph.

The afternoon session was stopped a lot of times because of spins and accidents. Fernandez and Fittipaldi were some of the "victims". "I got a bit too excited about my time, and wanted to go faster and spun" said a happy Christian.

"A victory here would mean a lot to me, as this is one of the main reasons that I become a racing driver" said Gil.

"I have not had the chance to really do a fast lap because of the many yellow flags. We are still learning the track and trying to find the best setup" said Hilio Castro Neves, 12th on the time sheets of at the end of the session.
