INDIANAPOLIS, Mar. 1, 2001 -- Walker Racing driver Tora Takagi had his final test session before the start of the CART FedEx Championship Series cut short by rain this week. Tora was to test on Feb. 27 -- 28 at the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway oval, but was only able to test on Tuesday in between intermittent showers, while Wednesday's testing was completely rained out.
"Like the other drivers who tested at PIR, I was frustrated to not be able to test as much as I'd wanted, due to the rain," said Tora. "Even though I improved my time from the last test here in January, we still had some things we would have liked to accomplish. Lately, it seems like wherever I go to test, it's raining. I hope it's not like that in Mexico!"
Tora's total laps in the #5 Pioneer/DENSO Special during the rain-shortened test were 94, with a quick time of 21.3 seconds. "The off-season trail is now at an end," said owner Derrick Walker. "This first year of the new CART testing rules has seen a very compressed period of off-season testing with a new car, engine and driver. To make things even more of a challenge, the weather took its share of our valuable testing time from us.
Now we are looking forward to going racing and seeing the fruits of all the hard work our team has put in!" The Walker Racing team's next stop will be Monterrey, Mexico for the Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix Presented by Herdez at Fundidora Park. The race will be broadcast on Mar. 11 at 4 p.m. (ET) on ABC.
