Rahal Honored At National Athletic Awards

Three-time FedEx Championship Series champion Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford) received the Lifetime Achievement in Auto Racing award at the National Athletic Awards in Detroit last week.

The annual event honors America's top athletic achievers to benefit the March of Dimes. Joining Rahal as award recipients were Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson of the University of Michigan, PGA tour veteran Tom Kite, WNBA basketball star Sheryl Swoopes and the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

The event was hosted by Greg Gumbel, most recently host of NBC Sports' NFL Live.

"I've achieved more in my career than I ever thought possible," said Rahal, PPG Cup champion in 1986, '87 and '92, in accepting his award. "I've been very blessed. To be recognized in the company of these great athletes is high praise."

Rahal announced in November that the 1998 FedEx Championship Series season would be his last as a driver in any form of motorsport. He is the owner of both the Miller Lite Reynard Ford and the Shell Reynard Ford campaigned by Bryan Herta in the FedEx Championship Series, as well as the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship entry driven by Mike Borkowski.
