HOUSTON, TEXAS . . . The Bobby Rahal Foundation made the fourteenth in a series of season-long charitable donations this afternoon when it contributed $17,000 to The First Tee Organization in Houston. Three-time PPG Cup champion Bobby Rahal presented the foundation donation in a ceremony prior to the running of the Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston. Accepting the donation on behalf of The First Tee of Houston was Candace Rylander. The First Tee's purpose is to create facilities and programs that make golf more affordable and accessible, with strong emphasis on introducing kids of all races and economic backgrounds to golf. The First Tee has established an initial goal of identifying sites for 100 golf facilities in various stages of planning, development and operation by the year 2000. Team Rahal's corporate partner, the Shell Oil Company, is a founding partner in The First Tee program, an outreach of the World Golf Village. "Team Rahal's generous donation to The First Tee will provide additional opportunities for underprivileged children in Houston to have access to the game of golf," said Kevin West, Sponsorship Manager for Shell. The Bobby Rahal Foundation is the not-for-profit endowment created by the two-time Driver of the Year to coincide with his final season as a driver. During the 1998 season and "Rahal's Last Ride," the foundation raised over $400,000 that has been earmarked for charitable organizations in CART race communities in 1999. "I'm truly flattered by the outpouring of support this program generated and thrilled to help so many valuable organizations and programs like the First Tee Organization," said Rahal. "Racing has enriched my life. Now, through the good work of the foundation, it's going to enrich the lives of others."
