FONTANA, Calif. - Today's first day of practice for the Marlboro 500 at the California Speedway was delayed for a few hours because of wet conditions.

Project Racing Group (P.R.G.) racing driver Luiz Garcia Jr. did not seem to mind waiting for his first run at California Speedway and only second time on a super speedway overall.

The Brazilian ran a best time of 33.155 seconds (220.311 mph) around the 2.029-mile course.

"I think we had a decent session today. We weren't super fast, but it was a good start compared to our last start on a super speedway (Michigan). We need to work a little bit on the gears. Our top gear was too long, and fifth gear too short. Once we get the gears sorted out and we get more time on the track, we'll find some more speed. The car works well and in and out of traffic. This track is of course very similar to Michigan, but they both have their own distinguishing charachteristics. It's a bit more bumpy here than Michigan." - Luiz Garcia Jr., Driver
