Phoenix, AZ -- PacWest Racing's Mark Blundell had one of the most positive tests of his Champ Car career when he completed 166 trouble-free miles at the Phoenix International Raceway today.
Blundell produced a quick time of 19.99 seconds in his Motorola PacWest Mercedes-Benz around the one-mile oval and could not be separated for quickest time honors from Forsythe Racing's Patrick Carpentier.
"Today's test was definitely our best for the season and certainly one of the best in recent times," said Blundell.
"Everybody was extremely happy with the progress and we leave the track knowing there is still more to come.
"The law of averages says you have to have good and bad days, but life is a lot better when things are going your way.
"Today's test was certainly very pleasing with the season drawing closer and the first couple of races on ovals. We learned a lot and I was quick as well."
Today's results were a huge boost for the team after being plagued by problems which caused two days of testing to be cut short in Sebring, Florida last week.
Team Manager Russell Cameron said today's test had lifted the spirits of the PacWest team and provided a welcome confidence boost with the season now less than a month away.
"Mark's feedback has been terrific and his communication with Steve Clark (his new engineer) has been very encouraging," said Cameron.
"I don't think we really could have asked for much more from today's test.
"We did a quick time and then put together a long run and all the results indicated we are certainly heading in the right direction.
"It will be a nice starting point with both our drivers on the track tomorrow."
PacWest will continue testing at PIR tomorrow with Blundell being joined by his teammate Mauricio Gugelmin who will be driving his recently unveiled Nextel PacWest Mercedes-Benz.
The opening round of the FedEx Championship Series will be held at the Homestead Miami Speedway on March 24-26.
