CHAMPCAR/CART: Portland Team Rahal Friday Update

...

#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard Papis ran the entire morning session on a single set of tires and ended up 17th overall (59.828 sec./118.480 mph). Papis felt the track was slick and the majority of the session was spent searching for grip through changes to the shocks, wings and tire pressure. Papis picked up the pace in the afternoon on a track that was considerably slicker due to residue on the track left by the other series at Portland this weekend. Papis posted the 11th fastest time in qualifying at 59.709 sec./118.454 mph while struggling with the slick conditions. "There was no grip at all for us this afternoon," said Papis. "We had understeer and oversteer. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the power to the ground. I drove to the apex of the corners and then turned and applied the power. It's not the correct way to drive the circuit here. You need rhythm and I wasn't able to get into a rhythm today. I think everyone had trouble with the slippery conditions today. I believe the track will be better on Saturday."

#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard Brack was quick in the morning session turning a lap of 58.729 sec./120.697 mph on his second set of tires. The lap was third quickest overall trailing only Helio Castroneves and Christian Fittipaldi. In the afternoon Brack's session was cut short as he served the eight-minute penalty left over from Detroit for causing a stoppage in the final day of qualifying. While the other drivers had a full 30 minutes of green time, Brack had only 22 minutes. As a result he didn't get to fully utilize his second set of tires and settled with a lap of 59.709 sec./118.716 mph for his qualifying effort. That left him ninth on the provisional grid for Sunday's race. "The heat must have made the track slick this afternoon," said Brack. "We were really sliding around out there. Due to the penalty we had to move up our strategy for running this afternoon. The track was improving at the end of the session but we couldn't take advantage of it. I am starting to get used to this track. We only tested one day here in April and the conditions were different - not as hot. I think we can make improvements for Saturday and take a good run at the front of the field."
