The Gugelmin Report
by Alan Perry, motorsport.com
Mauricio Gugelmin, driving the #17 Nextel PacWest Reynard with Toyota power, qualified well for the Freightliner/G.I. Joe's 200 to be held on 24 June at Portland International Raceway.
After qualifying (but before the second qualifying group ran), motorsport.com caught up with Gugelmin.
m.com - How did it go?
"Pretty good. We learned quite a bit this morning. This afternoon we just developed the car a bit more. The balance is better because of this. I am disappointed to be in the first [qualifying] group because normally the second one goes a little bit better. The time that I did was pretty much what I had in the car. We'll see what happens when the second group goes out. Hopefully, we're gonna have a top ten start so we can have a good race tomorrow."
m.com - So, the car's working well? Any problems?
"The balance ... I am pretty happy with it. There are no big problems with the car. It just needs a bit more grip and a bit more horsepower and we'll be looking good."
m.com - Are you having fun?
"Oh, yes. I am always having fun."
After the second group ran, it turned out that Gugelmin almost got what he wanted. He qualified 11th.
