Tony Kanaan brought his #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola home in eighth place in today's G.I. Joe's 200 CART FedEx Championship Series race at Portland International Raceway. Kanaan started 14th and moved up to 11th after a Lap 3 incident in Turn 1 that involved three cars. The race first went green on Lap 3 after three abort attempts to start the race. Kanaan held the 11th position through the first round of pit stops that began on Lap 30, then moved to as high as seventh during his second fuel-and-tire run. Kanaan pitted for the second time on Lap 60 and rejoined the race in sixth place. He pitted a final time on Lap 88, re-emerged in ninth place after the round of stops, and moved up to eight on Lap 92 of today's 110-lap event.
The finish was worth five championship points, giving Kanaan seven for the season. He is in 18th position in the driver points standings.
Cristiano da Matta was the winner today for the second weekend in a row and the third time this season. Bruno Junqueira was second and Dario Franchitti was third.
The series takes a weekend off before returning for back-to-back-to-back races at Chicago, Toronto and Cleveland beginning June 30.
TONY KANAAN QUOTES
"Our goal was to just stay out of trouble and make it to the end, and we managed to do that. After struggling all weekend, we had to settle for a pretty modest goal like that. The car turned out to be okay today and we were looking pretty good there in the late stages of the race. Then we had a little confusion about whether they were going to go to a full-course caution when Adrian (Fernandez) crashed. I got called into the pits early and we ended up getting shuffled back two positions. That's the way it goes, sometimes. At least I got some points and I'm not last in the standings anymore. Hey, seriously, it feels like we're on our way back!"
