SUNDAY, JUNE 22, 2003 - The return of "Mad Max" Papis to CART Champ Car racing didn't have as happy of a finish as he would have liked. Papis, who drove the No. 27 PK Racing Lola-Ford Cosworth, started the G.I. Joe's 200 at Portland International Raceway from the 15th overall position. He had moved up to 12th position before having an incident with the No. 5 rookie, Rodolfo Lavin. Papis had passed Lavin a few laps previous and Lavin was attempting to get his position back when he collided with the Italian and forced him into the gravel on Lap 87.

"We had to fight hard all race, especially at the beginning," said Papis. "We are working on understanding how to set the car up with our new relationship and figure everything out. The team did a good job in the pits. We were able to a pull a pass. But unfortunately when you race in the back, you race with people who sometimes make mistakes. His (Lavin) mistake broke our front right steering arm. We still put in our best effort. It was not the position we belong at PK Racing. We don't belong below P5 or P6. We will capitalize on testing and be back at Cleveland."

Papis was classified in the 15th finishing position. Adrian Fernandez won today's Portland race, just two seconds ahead of Paul Tracy. For more information, see www.cart.com.

The next CART race, the Cleveland Grand Prix, will be held on July 5. Next weekend Papis will switch hats and hop back into his American LeMans Series JML Team Panoz sports car for the Grand Prix of Atlanta ALMS race, June 29.
