Haberfeld encouraged despite 15th on starting grid

Portland, Oregon (June 19, 2004) -- Brazilian driver Mario Haberfeld (Walker Racing) has qualified 15th for the Champ Car Grand Prix of Portland taking place on Sunday, June 20, 2004.

Despite the unenviable position on the grid, Haberfeld is confident about his chances of a good finish in tomorrow's race. "Most of our understeering problems have been fixed between yesterday's qualifying session and today", said the driver. "The car was much more consistent today, and if the temperatures drop as forecasted, my Reynard chassis should benefit as well." Haberfeld posted a faster time today than during yesterday's session, but maintained his starting position on the grid.

Haberfeld expected to be much faster today, but his team adopted a risky strategy during qualifying, which backfired. "We waited until the last part of qualifying to complete our fifteen allotted laps, but after Paul Tracy caused the red flag there just wasn't enough time for us to warm up the tires and run a faster lap."

The strategy in place is often used by teams during qualifying sessions, but it does incur a certain degree of risk. "We gambled, and we lost", said Haberfeld accepting his fate. "Now it is important to look towards tomorrow with a positive attitude", concluded the Brazilian.
