A.J. Allmendinger #7 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -- "I think from the start of the weekend, including yesterday, Forsythe has done a great job to get me here and get me in the car and fitted correctly. More than anything, the team just really made me feel like at home, they're excited to have me here. For the first time in a while, I was able to come to the track today and have fun and be happy and really enjoy myself. Practice, the team did a great job to get out there and get a good feel of the car. In qualifying, we were about a 10th off of Sebastien on the black tires, and we thought we could go out there and put the reds on. Especially, if Sebastien didn't, maybe steal one. Fortunately it worked out because the red came out when I first went out there, so I had already done about two laps on the tires. After that, as Paul said, there was a ton of traffic. I think I was probably the last guy in line. It might have been the most ugly pole lap anybody's ever seen because I about crashed in turn one because everybody has been dropping wheels, so there was dirt all over the track. I tried to top that by crashing even harder in turn seven, but somehow stayed on the track. I really don't know how I got pole, but thanks to Forsythe and especially Red Bull for sticking behind me in the tough times. We'll take it."
Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone --"It went really good for the McDonald's car. First run was good. It's just like PT said, in six and seven, it feels like you're all of a sudden going on ice. I don't know what's up there, but it was the same thing at the test. I guess AJ feels more comfortable with the car because he put the option tires. It's just on the standard tires, it's extremely difficult. There's not much you can do because for me the car is perfect everywhere else. You get to these two corners, it's the end of the day. It's bizarre. You know, we're fighting Justin, so it's okay. We just looked around in pit lane and saw who was going to put the option Bridgestone tires. AJ was one of the few takers, so tomorrow we'll have two sets. We'll stick to our guns, keep the same strategy week in, week out. Well, we hope it's going to work out tomorrow with no rain."
Paul Tracy #3 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone --"We're just really struggling with our car. Sounds like Sebastien has the same trouble. Turn six and seven, I just don't seem to have any grip. Really just chasing the car across the track. I try to turn in, the car won't turn. All of a sudden it's in an oversteer condition. I'm losing a lot of time just in the one corner. We were kind of chasing our tails a little bit, trying to fix the problem. Really on the second stint, went out and I spun there. Red came out just after that. We came up, put some more fuel in the car, went out to trying to go again, but there was too much traffic. You know, ultimately I think we got a little bit of a gift today. I don't think we really deserved to be third. We ended up there, so I guess we'll take it."
Will Power #5 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -" I'm really happy with my position at the moment. The session went really well because we know we have good car and we were able to come away with great data to work with for the rest of the weekend. The car was did really well on the red tires, we just didn't get a clear run, there were only three minutes left to go and everyone went out on the same time, so that made it a bit more difficult, but at least everyone else was in the same boat. My engineers, along with the whole Team Australia crew, have been great they made some really good changes after the first session, so tomorrow should be a good run."
Alex Tagliani #15 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone --"I feel great right now, I'm really happy with our day and the Aussie Vineyards car. We had some issues with the engine this morning it was not very good, so we didn't have great runs. This afternoon in qualifying we were having the same problems, so I was getting really concerned and all of a sudden we fixed it. The car performed a lot better and we had a really good first run. I'm really looking forward to start tomorrow with a fresh sheet of paper and working on improving our position."
Nelson Philippe #4 CTE Racing-HVM Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "We had a good car from when we left the test after Long Beach but both Dan and I weren't able to fully showcase our speed today. Dan caused a red flag and lost his fastest lap and the Rocketsports car on a very quick lap blocked me so I was not able to finish to my potential. It is unfortunate because we could have been third and fourth. It's going to be interesting to see what everybody does tomorrow but overall it's looking positive for us."
Dan Clarke #14 CTE Racing-HVM Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone -"Overall I'm quite pleased with our performance today. I've been able to run comfortably within the top ten all afternoon, but I think we'll be able to improve the car; I'm sure there's more speed to come. We've saved our softer red tires for tomorrow as well, so this should also help us to stay competitive. It's good to have been fourth quickest and top rookie on lap times, but I had a small problem on the final turn towards the end of qualifying. I just ran onto the grass, but unfortunately stalled, so we had to forfeit our best lap and drop from fourth to eighth. But we know we have a good car and we should be able to bounce back tomorrow."
Oriol Servia #6 Gulfstream Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Obviously the Gulfstream -- PKV Racing team is not happy qualifying ninth. But, considering we had to use the backup car it is not bad. It was important that we get a decent time in today in case it rains tomorrow for final qualifying. We wanted to at least be in the top-10, and we are, so that is good. The Gulfstream -- PKV Racing crew did a great job getting the car ready for qualifying. Now we just have to work on the set up and hopefully get a chance to move up the grid tomorrow."
Bruno Junqueira #2 Newman/Haas Racing Ford-Cosworth/Bridgestone/Lola -- "Someone went off in Turn 1 when I made my first run and there was dirt on the track. I couldn't get a lap on the second set because there was too much traffic since the red flag bunched everyone up. The car wasn't as bad as P11 (eleventh place). I could have been P5 based on the splits which wouldn't have been so bad. We need to improve the car for final qualifying and we'll work hard on that tonight."
Andrew Ranger #27 Mi-Jack Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone --"We had problems this morning with oversteer and again in the pre-qualifying practice session but we did some changes just before qualifying which paid off. Don (Bricker) my engineer did a great job. The car was much better and easier to drive. I'm 12th but it is really close out there. We are on the right track, and I am really happy with that. Tomorrow we will try and do better, hopefully the weather will be like today and we can continue to push hard and pick up a few tenths because with a field this close it can make all the difference."
Katherine Legge #20 Bell Micro Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Of course I am not happy qualifying 14, but as usual the Bell Micro -- PKV Racing team treated provisional qualifying like another practice session. We had a good car here in Portland during the test in April, but today it did not feel like the same car. So we continued to work on the setup during provisional qualifying and I think we made some improvement. The thing that gives me hope is that we know the direction we need to go to make the car better. I have every confidence in the Bell Micro -- PKV Racing team that we will get it sorted out for tomorrow."
Mario Dominguez #19 Sonny's Bar-B-Q Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "We were fighting an oversteer and never got rid of it. We had a little bit of it this morning, and it just kept coming in more and more and got worse and worse. We didn't use red tires, and I think everyone else did. We wanted to save them for tomorrow. Everything has been good with the new team. They have been very receptive to me and what I have to say. I have to put what happened behind me and go forward and concentrate on this weekend and getting the car to go faster. We worked very hard today and now we have some more work to do to make the car better for tomorrow and make it go faster. That's what we are going to do."
Nicky Pastorelli #8 Bavaria City Racing/Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "We are obviously not happy with our results today. I think we can definitely improve tomorrow, but we are going to have to do a lot of work. I do not think that we got the maximum out of the car this afternoon. I was blocked twice during the qualifying session and never got in the one fast lap that you really need because I believe we would have posted a quicker time. Our main issue is that we still have to find a good balance to the #8 Bavaria City Racing/Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone car. We will work hard tonight, and go back out there tomorrow to try to make up the speed we were lacking today."
Charles Zwolsman #34 Mi-Jack Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Qualifying did not go too well. We had a lot of understeer and we're going to analyze the data and look at the car. The car was the same this morning, we made some changes but they didn't have the right effect. We just have to keep working hard and find the right balance on the car."
Tonis Kasemets #18 Flexovit Abrasives/Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone - "Well today was very exciting being my first time out in a Champ Car with all the competition. We have all four corners of the car in tact, so it was a good day in the terms of it being incident free. I am still learning the #18 Flexovit Abrasives/Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone car and I know that there is more to gain with me driving it. We will work hard tonight to make more adjustments/improvements on the car and my driving technique with the goal tomorrow to improve our position on the timing and scoring charts."
