ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - Qualified 5th - YOU SEEM TO BE GETTING ACCLIMATED TO THE 1999 REYNARD PRETTY QUICKLY . . . "It's just a better car. It's a more solid car. It has a lot more downforce." TELL ME ABOUT YOUR QUALIFYING RUN TODAY . . . "We are pleased with the results. I made a little mistake on my fast lap which cost us maybe not pole but second place." ARE YOU AT ALL CONCERNED WITH ANOTHER INCIDENT HAPPING GOING INTO THE FIRST TURN LIKE LAST YEAR? "The further you are up the front the less chance you have to get caught up in something like that. Hopefully there won't be another Greg Moore coming from behind like there was last year."
P.J. JONES -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 23rd - "I am very disappointed in my qualifying effort today. I am disappointed for myself and the entire Visteon team. The car was pushing and we didn't have a good run. We made some changes at the end but we weren't able to get the car right. We have a lot of positions to make up tomorrow. We will just have to be patient."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 14th - "We just didn't have the grip we wanted. We made a change at the end of the session and went the wrong way. I would have gone quick right away but the red flag came out and we were not able to take advantage of it. We made a change for the second run and I ran a good lap time but the car didn't feel any better. It is a shame because I thought we had the potential to be up front." ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT STARTING IN THE 7th ROW? "It is going to be very hard to make up positions on the track. Passing is tough to do here. We are going to have to make up some places in the pits for sure."
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 9th - YOU WERE USING ALL THE TRACK DURING YOUR QUICK LAP. YOU EVEN GOT OFF ONTO THE GRASS . . ."The car was a little loose on me. On my fastest lap I lost it a bit ran over a curb and through the grass and that lap still ended up being my quickest time. If I would not have gone over the curb I figure we could have been second quick. I think we will be competitive tomorrow and be able to put a good race together and gain some points in the championship."
MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 10th - "This morning was the first time that I have run this car on this track in dry conditions. I am happy with the effort we put up today. But with a little more track time we could have been able to post a quicker time. Right now we are running at about 80-percent of our potential so hopefully we can close the gap between now and race time tomorrow and be at 100-percent when the green flag drops."
BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 4th - YOU SEEMED TO BE REALLY WORKING THE CAR AT TIMES DURING YOUR QUICK LAPS . . . "The car was really sliding around on me. We were struggling to find grip in the car during the session. I really wanted, and was shooting for, the pole and I thought we had a great shot at it after this morning. But we will end up starting tomorrow in the first few rows which is an improvement over the last few weeks. I am very confident going into tomorrow. We will make a few adjustments tonight so look for us to be strong tomorrow."
MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR -19- Herdez Viva Mexico Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 24th - "The car had too much push. We just have not been able to get the setup right this weekend." THERE WAS SOME CONCERN IN REGARDS TO THE LOLA'S POTENTIAL ON ROAD COURSES, BUT WITH HELIO CASTRO-NEVES' RUN THIS AFTERNOON YOU HAVE TO BE PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE LOLA IS STRONG ON ROAD COURSES TOO . . . "We have known that all along. It's just a matter of us getting the setup right. Lola has put together a great car this year but unfortunately we have just not been able to show what it is capable of yet. But we are continuing to work very hard and I am confident that we can get things turned around soon."
LUIZ GARCIA, JR. -71- Tang Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 27th - "We are finding time every session we run. The improvements are coming but just not quick enough. It's a shame we didn't test here because I believe it would have really helped us. Yesterday I think we started to show what kind of potential we have. It was a real nice feeling to have guys from the other teams take notice and come up to me and congratulate me on my run."
