Gil de Ferran of Marlboro Team Penske became the first FedEx Championship Series driver of the 2000 season to win two events when he successfully defended his championship in the Freightliner/G.I. Joe's 200 Presented by Texaco at Portland International Raceway. De Ferran (Marlboro Honda Reynard) coupled an earlier victory on the one-mile Nazareth Speedway oval with a win on the 1.969-mile road course to break a run which had seen a series-record seven different winners in the season's first seven events. His performance keyed the first podium sweep by Braxilian drivers in CART history as countrymen Roberto Moreno (Visteon Ford Reynard) and Christian Fittipaldi (Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford Lola) finished second and third, respectively. De Ferran led 23 laps, including the final eight, while finishing 2.625 seconds ahead of Moreno. He averaged 109.564 miles per hour for the 220.528-mile event. The runner-up finish allowed Moreno to take the FedEx Championship Series lead for the first time in his career. He exited with 68 points and a one-point advantage over de Ferran, while Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda Reynard) of Team KOOL Green stood third with 59.
