INSTANT REPLAY: Max Papis survived a rain-soaked race day in 2001 to dominate the G.I. Joe's 200 en route to his second career CART victory. Papis kept his Team Rahal machine on track while others foundered in the ever-falling waters, leading 69 of the 76 laps to beat Roberto Moreno and Christian Fittipaldi to the line. The treacherous conditions wreaked havoc on the first half of the event as 25 of the first 47 laps were run under caution as nine different incidents stopped the action. But the last half of the race was trouble free as Papis took the lead from Fittipaldi on Lap 41 and roared away for the win. The race threw the championship chase into disarray as well as none of the top 10 drivers in the points were able to post a top-five finish, including point leaders Kenny Brack and Helio Castroneves, who spun together in the first turn of the first lap. Eventual Vanderbilt Cup winner Gil de Ferran would finish out of the points altogether while Papis and Moreno would climb into the top 12 in the title hunt with their finishes. Three-time Portland winner Michael Andretti was the highest placing of the title hopefuls on the day, overcoming a spin and a drive-through penalty for an illegal pass to finish eighth.
