Troy, MI (June 9, 1998) -- As the Marlboro Pole Award jackpot continues to grow to record levels, it is appropriate that it reaches a milestone at next weekend's Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 Presented by Texaco/Havoline at Portland International Raceway.

The Pole Award includes presentation of $10,000 to the top qualifier at each FedEx Championship Series event, plus a bonus of $15,000 if the pole winner goes on to win the race. The bonus rolls over until a victory from the pole is registered, and that hasn't happened in nearly a year.

The Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 Presented by Texaco/Havoline marks the 16th FedEx Championship Series event since the rollover was last claimed by Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) at Cleveland last year. As a result, the total potential payout in Marlboro Pole Award money next weekend at Portland is a quarter-million dollars, $240,000 of it in rollover funds.

The potential payout is a record for the six-year history of the Marlboro Pole Award, and the current stretch of 15 races without a victory from the pole is a FedEx Championship Series record.

If the $250,000 jackpot was converted into dollar bills laid end to end, the trail would extend for 24.167 miles, or enough circle the 1.967-mile permanent road course at Portland more than 12 times.

It is fitting that the Pole Award payoff reaches the quarter-million dollar milestone as it comes to Portland, since that venue is where the previous record Pole Award jackpot was paid out. Al Unser Jr. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) collected $160,000 for his victory from the pole in the 1994 Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200. The jackpot included a $150,000 rollover which had accumulated since Paul Tracy's 1993 victory from the pole at Road America.
