Record Marlboro Pole Award at Rio

The potential Marlboro Pole Award payoff continues to grow at record levels heading into Sunday's Rio 400. A record purse of $190,000, the highest payoff in the six-year history of the award, will be paid out if Saturday's polesitter goes on to win Sunday's race. The potential record payout includes $10,000 for the pole winner, plus $180,000 in rollover bonus funds which have accumulated at a rate of $15,000 per race since Alex Zanardi's victory at Cleveland last July. The Rio 400 marks the 12th event since Zanardi's victory from the pole, accounting for the potentially hefty payoff. Al Unser Jr. collected the Marlboro Pole Award's previous record payoff of $160,000 for his 1994 victory from the pole at Portland.
