Champ Car World Series Points Leader Sebastien Bourdais Nominated For SPEED Channel Driver of the Quarter
INDIANAPOLIS (June 14, 2005) -- Defending Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford champion Sebastien Bourdais (#1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) has had an impressive stretch of racing over the last two months, vaulting back into the Champ Car points lead as well as capturing a hard-fought victory in the International Race of Champions (IROC) event in Texas.
The Frenchman was recognized over the weekend for his strong run of recent performances as the Newman/Haas driver was nominated for SPEED Channel's Driver of the Quarter award for the second quarter of the 2005 racing season.
Bourdais is very familiar with being put on this impressive list, having been nominated in three of the last four quarters of SPEED Channel voting. He was also the people's choice in 2004 SPEED Channel's Driver of the Year standings, capturing the fan vote after winning the 2004 Champ Car title. Bourdais was also second overall in the third-quarter voting for last season's honor.
Bourdais started his campaign to defend his 2004 championship title in impressive style capturing a victory in the season opener in Long Beach. Only five days later, the 2004 Champ Car titlewinner was in Texas showcasing his talent in the International Race of Champions (IROC). After an outstanding performance where Bourdais led virtually from flag to flag in his second stock car style start, he became the first Champ Car driver in 8 years (Al Unser Jr. 1997) to win an IROC event. In the Champ Car World Series second round at Monterrey, Bourdais captured the pole position before placing another top-five finish.
This quarter Bourdais will be dueling for the honor with Greg Anderson (NHRA Pro Stock), Dan Wheldon (IRL), Greg Biffle (NASCAR), Jimmie Johnson (NASCAR), Steve Kinser (World of Outlaws), Danica Patrick (IRL), and John Force (NHRA Funny Car).
In its 39th year, the Driver of the Year Award will be determined by an independent vote of an 18-member panel of blue ribbon auto racing journalists and broadcasters. Drivers' achievements are evaluated using the following criteria: Track Performance, Sportsmanship, Humanitarianism, and Fan Recognition.
Fans can also vote on the honor, with the result of that voting serving as the 19th vote in determining the award. To have your voice heard log on to www.speedtv.com and vote today. The winner will be announced exclusively on Speed Channel Saturday, June 25 at 7:00pm ET.
