Team Player's Draws Rave Reviews At Cart Sneak Preview Weekend As Drivers Carpentier And Tagliani Clock 2nd And 3rd Fastest Times
Monterey, California, February 10, 2002 When the final laps of the CART Sneak Preview were run on Sunday, completing 10 hours of weekend testing, Team Player's was a major force as drivers Patrick Carpentier and Alex Tagliani had the second and third fastest times of the two sessions.
Carpentier, who was third quickest on Saturday, shaved almost two-tenths of a second off that clocking in the second of the two Sunday sessions, powering his way around the 2.238-mile Laguna Seca road course in 1 minute, 9.519 seconds (115.893 miles per hour). This briefly stood up as the best lap of the session, until Brazil's Cristiano da Matta put in a lap of 1:08.981 (116.797 mph). Da Matta was the quickest in all four of the Sneak Preview testing sessions.
Tagliani's fast lap of 1:09.545 that he clocked on his next-to-last tour of the track on Saturday stood as the third fastest time of the weekend. He was poised to improve on that performance in the final session on Sunday but a rash of red flags, particularly toward the end of the session, made it difficult to put in any hot laps.
"We can definitely qualify the weekend as a big success," said Carpentier. "Team Player's came to Laguna Seca with a checklist of things to do and we were able to do everything that was on the list. We spent quite a bit of time today working on the suspension, shocks and differential. In the last session, we set the car up to try to do a fast lap and it worked out extremely well."
Tagliani described the Sneak Preview sessions, which were run in ideal weather conditions on both days, as "very useful and productive, both in terms of learning things about the car and seeing how we stack up against the other teams in the series. There were a few things on our list that we didn't quite finish because the red flags toward the end of today's session cost us some track time. We were set up to do a fast lap, for instance, and we weren't able to do so.
"Overall, however, we came out of the weekend with a great feeling. From the testing sessions, we know that we're headed in the right direction and we want to build on this momentum for the opening race in Mexico in a few weeks time."
Prior to the season opener, the two Team Player's drivers will run test laps on the Homestead road course, February 25-26. During the sessions, the drivers will also go head to head in a simulated race.
