Sebring, Florida, February 22, 2001 Persistence paid off for Team Player's and Alex Tagliani as their two-day testing session on the 1.64-mile Sebring road course concluded today on a positive note.
After encountering some glitches with the engine that put Tagliani in the middle of the pack in clockings on Wednesday, the Team Player's crew was able to find and fix the problem during today's session. As a result, Tagliani recorded times that were on a par with the fastest speeds registered on Wednesday, when many of the FedEx CART teams were wrapping up their Sebring testing session and ran most of their laps.
"We were able to run six-tenths of a second faster today, and that put us right up with the leaders," said Tagliani. "That was a great boost for the team and gave me a lot of confidence as the off-season testing is about to conclude. The chassis has been very good and I think the key will be the engine development because everything else has been really consistent. But the progress with the engine at today's session is a really encouraging sign."
Tagliani put in about 60 laps today with less traffic and rubber on the track than the previous day with fewer teams using the track. In contrast to the testing session on Wednesday, when Team Player's had to cope with some minor but time-consuming problems with brakes, today's session unfolded seamlessly.
"The first day of testing was the complete opposite of last year's off-season testing session at Sebring," said Team Player's manager Phil LePan. "We were not as fast on the straightaways but quicker in the corners. On the second day, we were consistent with our speed in all areas of the track."
Tagliani has only one more off-season testing session scheduled on the Homestead, Florida oval this Sunday. His teammate Patrick Carpentier wraps up his off-season testing on the Firebird road course in Phoenix on February 26-27. Following this session, Team Player's will set its sights on the opening race of the CART season, in Monterrey, Mexico on March 11.
