MILWUAKEE, WISCONSIN - SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2001 -- Round #6 of the 2001 FedEx Championship Series - Today's qualifying for tomorrow's Miller Lite 225 at the Milwaukee Mile in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was canceled due to rain.
Therefore, the starting grid for the race will be based on the 2001 FedEx Championship Series standings. Jimmy Vasser, in the #40 Patrick Racing Toyota Reynard will lineup fifth. He is tied for third in the standings with 40 points, however tiebreakers are based upon this season's best finish. Vasser, who's highest showing is a fourth at Nazareth, will start behind series leader Kenny Brack, Helio Castroneves, second, Cristiano da Matta, who also has 40 points, but has won a race and Paul Tracy, 40 points, but a best finish of third. Roberto Moreno in the #20 Visteon/Patrick Racing Toyota Reynard will start 17th. Moreno is tied for 15th in the standings with six points, but will lineup behind Alex Zanardi, six points and a best finish of seventh and Shinji Nakano, six points, but an eighth place showing. Moreno's top finish this year is tenth at Japan.
Vasser is seeking to extend a streak at Milwaukee that has seen him place in the points in seven of his eight races. He has finished in the top-10 six times and the top-four three times including a victory in 1998. His other points paying finish came in 1994 when he placed 11th. He placed 13th last year. Vasser has finished in the top-six in all four races this year placing sixth at Mexico, fifth in Long Beach, fourth in Nazareth and fifth in Japan. He has scored points in 44 of his last 59 (33 of last 40) oval races with 41 top-10 finishes, 22 top-five showings, 12 podiums and five wins. The native of California has finished 89 of his last 107 races placing in the points 85 times. In 151 career CART starts, Vasser has 90 top-10 finishes including 26 podium showings, nine victories and seven poles.
Moreno will be making his seventh start in Milwaukee. In six previous races he has finished in the points three times. Last year he had his best showing in Milwaukee starting seventh and finishing fifth. The native of Brazil has placed in the points in his last three races finishing 11th at Long Beach, 12th in Nazareth and tenth in Japan. Moreno, who has finished in the top-10 in 19 of his last 37 starts and in the points 25 times, has placed in the points in 13 of his last 16 oval races with ten top-10 finishes, six top-five performances and four podiums.
There will be a warm-up session tomorrow morning from 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. (local time) with the Miller Lite 225 scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. (local time). It will be televised live at 4:00 PM (ET) on ABC.
