JACKSON, MI - - FEBRUARY 1, 2001 - - Patrick Racing's Jimmy Vasser continued to show the speed that has made him one of the most competitive drivers in the FedEx Championship Series, while the team took another step forward in its pre-season development program, during a three-day test on the 1.5-mile Homestead, Florida oval January 30-February 1.
Vasser, who is entering his tenth CART season and first with Patrick Racing, clocked a quick time of 26.7 seconds on the final day of testing putting him at the top of the speed charts when the team stopped running. The talented and determined native of California, who is one of four CART Champions and three Americans currently active in the series, ran all three days of the test logging over 200 laps. Vasser, piloting the Patrick Racing Toyota Reynard, ran the quick lap, which he was able to do twice, toward the end of a 100+ lap session.
"It was a good solid blue collar, workman like test," said Vasser. "We weren't trying to set any track records and we still ended up with the fastest time. I think with the improvements we made, and the information we gathered, we have developed a very solid 1.5-mile oval platform."
Patrick Racing General Manager Jim McGee was particularly pleased with the new Toyota engine and the progress the team has made during its pre-season testing program saying, "We had another good test the last three days at Homestead. The Toyota engine once again ran without any problems. We lost some track time due to a minor mechanical problem, which we quickly corrected with the help of the manufacturer. Overall, the Patrick Racing Toyota Reynard ran very well and we are pleased with the way it is developing. We are right on schedule with our preparation for the start of the season."
Next up for Patrick Racing is a Shake Rig test next week. Then it's on to Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California February 13-15. Vasser and teammate Roberto Moreno, who pilots the #20 Visteon/Patrick Racing Toyota Reynard, are scheduled to participate in the Laguna Seca test.
